Can you say teamwork? ASM Darkroom members take constructive criticism to a whole new level. We used paper clips to place our votes for our favorite pictures and then told what we liked about each one. Each person was able to get feedback and was able to learn about one each other's pictures. For our first critique this semester I say it went really well, and so do the other students in our class.
"All of our members' work was very impressive." -Benny Herrera
"Awesome critique!" - Joseph Nelson
"Great vocabulary." - Klaudia Ryciua
"New styles of photography were demonstrated. Positive reenforcement; what ASM is all about!" -Alex Rodriguez
"I was really impressed with how supportive and helpful all of out teens were. Great group effort and some beautiful prints." - Jonathan Michael Johnson (program instructor)

So ASM has done it again ! We are showing everyone how teamwork is key. Today we established darkroom teams for all 3 of our darkrooms. Darkroom
1’s team name is Tardis, darkroom 2’s team name is The Red Comets, and
darkroom 3’s name is The Chicken Fingers. Each darkroom is competing
against each other for points. Points are awarded for a variety of
exceptional accomplishments. An example of earning a point might
be all the members of the darkroom must do their individual darkroom
jobs in order to maintain the cleanliness of the darkroom. Another
example is darkroom snaps. (To learn more about darkroom snaps click here) An example of loosing a point is forgetting to return your camera that you had checked out the previous class. |

Hey everyone our new recruits want you to see their prints. Check out the team's photograms on Flickr. New apprentices are introduced to the fundamentals of photography by
making a photogram: a camera-less photograph. After placing an object
or group of objects directly onto a sheet of photographically
sensitized paper, the entire group is exposed to light. Opaque objects
block light, leaving the shape of the object in white on the paper.
Areas not blocked by an object are black. Partially blocked areas are
different shades of gray. OUTLINE: Working
with your fellow apprentices, brainstorm until you have an entire page
of self-descriptive words. Plan a designer symbol to represent yourself
by processing all the words you've accumulated, by visualizing their
meaning. Through careful arrangement and creative modification of your
found objects, create a photogram of the a symbol that represents you. Photo credit: Lakesha Howard |

What's new? Well I'll tell you... Have you ever thought all your hard work went unnoticed in a group setting? Well here at ASM Darkroom, we like to hear your ideas into what will make the program even better! Here at the ASM Darkroom, we are a TEAM. - We discussed ways to positively critique others, give praise, and acknowledge things we find going wrong. This system will help us grow as artists. We will do this once a week and will call it Darkroom Snaps™.

Welcome to our site. This site is to update you on our work, progress, and our program in general. So, what is ASM Darkroom? The ASM Darkroom is an After School Matters based program. We are located at the Chicago Photography Center, 3301 N. Lincoln Ave. At this program we (the students) are advised and taught by program instructor, Jonathan (JJ) how to use a film based camera, the developing, and the dark room process. We get to learn what makes photography beautiful. We will go on field trips and explore the city of Chicago. The ASM Darkroom is a combination of learning, fun, and new experiences. Follow us on our journey one photo at a time.

Power ups, bonuses, 1 ups, and level ups! This may sound like your average video game, but it is actually the After School Matters structure at Chicago Academy High School. By incorporating video game elements into the classroom, After School Matters students increase motivation and set new goals for this semester's darkroom program.
We have split up the darkroom members into teams. These teams compete for points. Points are awarded for great effort, outstanding attitude, creativity, and advancement in skill. The more points the darkroom team members get, the more bonuses such as new equipment, and special privileges they get.
The students are involved in structuring this new system. They are the ones who suggest the rewards and they are the ones who choose the projects. One student, Edgar Covarrubias suggests that the advanced students engage in "boss battles" Where they go head to head against their instructors in a print off!
Watch the video below to see what inspired the changes in this years darkroom program.

The following was written by ASM apprentice Benny Herrera and appeared in the Chicago Academy High School news paper:
Out of the estimated group of sixty applicants, only six new applicants became official members of After School Matters’s Darkroom Photography program. This year’s list of members is much lower of that of last year’s group due to the budget cuts made onto all of ASM. When ASM Instructor Jonathan Johnson was asked about his feelings of the decline of new students he responded, “It’s disappointing having to turn away all these bright students,” he added, “Other programs in ASM have been cut, some even shut down.” Minimal spots means minimal chances of getting into the program if the applicant’s grade level is higher then a freshman.
Originally, the photography program consisted of at least 30 students, all of whom had to partake in interviews and fill out basic forms. Of these students, a sum were re-enlisting members such as Students Jovanni Agustin, Mauro Garcia, and more. Due to budget cuts the program can only obtain a maximum of 15 students due to having one instructor for the program. Some members fear their paychecks may also be involved with the cuts. “I guess we’ll have a bit more room to move around,” said Student Edgar Covarrubias. “but I hope out paychecks don’t get cut.” The fact that the photography group can house fifteen members is a bit troubling for the majority of members since most returned to the group. This means there a few spots for new members. “We need to hire more students so that future members may learn from them,” said Johnson, “but with so few spots available it will mean only choosing Freshman.” Picking six new people out of the forty applicants was a difficult task. Each student was evaluated by behavior, respect, timeliness and more during their interview. “If I don’t get all those signed forms by Monday, then we can get someone else in the wait-list,” said ASM Advisor and Teacher David McKoski as a warning to members who have yet to turn in registration forms. Around forty percent of this session’s members are new students so previous members are expected to pick up from were they left off last year. Instead of teaching all of the new members directly, forty percent of the members who are experienced are assigned to having a new member as an assistant and teaching them until the new member can handle task on their own and contribute even more to the group. In return, members who have an apprentice have rights to obtain a ‘God Camera’, an automatic SLR camera that has many features compared to the default camera available. One option left to bring membership up to the old numbers: send letters to the directors of the After School Matters program. Johnson believes that if enough are received the amount of new members for next session’s program may rise. The only other way for a student to join the current session is by having an open slot due to a current member dropping out of the program. After School Matter’s darkroom photography program will still resume and is expected to show much effort into the new photos this year by veteran and rookie members. |

Congratulations to Earl Hill -
Earl is an ASM Darkroom alum & the namesake of the coveted 'Earl Award'. A portfolio of Earl's work is currently on display at the new afterschoolmatters.org website. Also included is an interview, detailing the motivations and thoughts behind a selection of his work.
Last year Earl Hill set a standard for participation in the ASM Darkroom program - he brought critical thinking, reflection and a positive attitude. But, more than that, he was especially good at sharing his thoughts and techniques with other students. Earl exemplified the time held belief that if you to truly know something, you must be able to teach it to others.
In honor of Earl's contributions, we've established the 'Earl Award' to recognize apprentices who do more than meet the requirements, who make the program a richer and more rewarding place with their presence. It's wonderful to see ASM recognize Earl as a featured teen on their website - way to go Earl!

Wow that went by fast...
Thank you everyone for your hard work and dedication this Fall 2009 term. We covered a lot of ground - with field trips to Pilsen and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, a show at the Chicago Arts District exhibition space and a project with visiting artist David Schachman - it's pretty impressive that we made any prints ourselves. If you were not able to attend the closing exhibition of student work at Chicago Academy Library last week, I've included it below. I look forward to a great spring, take care and stay in touch.
